How To Install Water Filters In Your Kitchen

Everyone would like to have clean, clear drinking water. Water that is free of the impurities collected along the path from water catchment to kitchen faucet tastes better. Installing water filters is not as difficult an undertaking as you may think.

There are different types of units you can buy, but they all use cartridges to filter contaminants from your water. The cartridge you need will depend on the level and type of contaminant present in your local water. Be sure to read the information carefully so you select the right type.

Look under your sink to find the best place to locate the apparatus. You will want to make sure it is out of the way so you can access pipes when necessary. But, as you will need to change the cartridges it must be accessible too. Hold the unit in place and using a pencil mark the spots where the screws will go.

You won’t need a complete tool kit to undertake this task but you will need an adjustable wrench or one that is the right size to undo and tighten your plumbing fittings. You’ll also need a drill to make screw holes and a screwdriver to insert and tighten the screws that hold the mounts for the filtration unit.

Use your drill to drill holes at the marked spots. Hold the unit against the wall and using the screwdriver secure it in place. To do this, screw all the screws in lightly, and then gradually tighten each one by moving clockwise around the unit. When you are done check there is no movement in the unit.

Turn your water off using the cut off lever under the sink or, if you don’t have one of those, at the meter. If you forget to turn it off you will create a flood in your kitchen when you undo the fittings. When the water is turned off, turn the faucet on to allow any water left to drain out.

On close inspection you will find a flexible hose that connects the water supply with the pipes under your sink. This hose needs to be disconnected from the pipe and reconnected via the inlet of your water filtration unit. Place some paper towels under the hose before you disconnect it to absorb any remaining water in the line. A similar hose leads from the outlet of the unit and you connect this to the pipe under your sink.

Turn the water back on and check for leaks. If there are leaks turn the water off again and tighten the fittings. Turn the faucet on and let it flow until you can’t see any signs of sediment and the water flowing is completely clear. This should only take a few moments. If the water does not flow from the faucet check the lines to make sure you have connected them properly.

Your family will love the clean, fresh water that flows from your kitchen tap. To keep it this way be sure to change the filter cartridges according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Installing water filters is a quick and easy task that anyone can do.
