Obesity And Weight Loss: Getting To Ground Zero

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

The measure adopted to determine obesity in a person is body mass index (BMI). The BMI compares the weight and height of a person. A BMI measure from 25 kg/m2 to 30 kg/m2 is considered to indicate the condition of overweight while a BMI measure of over 30 kg/m2 is marked as obesity. Many health problems are associated with obesity and overweight. This includes heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain type of cancer, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis. Obesity and overweight makes one lethargic, less agile, tired and less energetic.

World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that obesity afflicts over a 400 million adults. Obesity was formally notified as a global problem by WHO. More than half of the adult populations living in the urban areas of the US are obese. While over a sixth of the global population is experiencing chronic hunger and starvation, yet paradoxically a major emerging threat to health is from obesity. An annual turnover of $40 billion is reported by the booming weight loss market.

There are numerous weight loss diet plans such as the 7 day diet, The Atkins diet, Anne Collins Weight Loss Program, NutriSystem, Diet Smart, Master Cleanse Secrets Jon Benson’s Every Other Day diet and Beverly Hills diet and many more in the market. Anti-obesity drugs are also available which can reduce your appetite or burn away the fat directly.

From the point of view of health, it is more important to lose about 10 percent of the weight and maintaining it for over a year rather than a drastic slimming down. This contributes to improvement in the health. This can be achieved by consuming low-calorie and low-fat diet, increased level of physical activity and regular monitoring of weight to ascertain the progress in weight loss. A standard practice adopted to loss fat and reduce obesity is to go on a starvation diet. Body needs on an average calorie intake of 1800 calories. There will be assorted problems if the calorie intake goes below 1200 calories. It is better and safer to maintain this normal calories intake but switch over to a more balanced diet combined with physical exercises.

Obesity is a terrible condition because it puts your health at greater risks. With willpower, dedication and weight loss diet plans like Master Cleanse Secrets, you can slim down and fight obesity in no time.

Why Are Your Joints Wearing Out So Fast

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Since 2000, the FDA reports that joint replacement surgery is on the rise. In 2001, 165,000 hip joints and 326,000 knees were replaced in just the USA.

Renaissance Orthopedics reports:

From 1971-1975, 51% of osteoarthritis cases were treated with knee replacements.

From 2000-2003, 92% of the osteoarthritis cases were treated with knee replacements.

From now to 2030, knee replacements will increase from 450,000 to 3.48 million per year.

* Also by the year 2030, it is estimated that the number of hip replacements will increase from 208,600 to 572,100.

Back in the 60’s I was living in North Carolina and I can’t remember that many people with joint replacements. According to the FDA, joint replacement has become more popular because it is easier than ever and available. I’m all for things being easier, but have joint replacements increased because of ease or are our bodies in that bad of shape? It is amazing to see people of all ages suffering with bad joints.

Inactivity is one reason for bad joints. Some people believe that if they don’t use their joints, they will not wear out. Unfortunately that is not true. You need to move your joints through their full range of motion, so your body will lubricate them. As you joint move, your body injects synovial fluid, oil like substance, into your joint. Thiskeeps your joint gliding along.

Active Isolated Stretching elongates the muscles around your joints keeping the proper spacing in each of your joints to protect the cartilage, which is there to cushion the joint. By exercising at least 30 minutes a day and stretching every other day you can help your joints to last a lot longer than what we see in the statistics above.

Poor diet contributes to joint replacement by not providing the body the proper nutrients to repair and heal muscle tissue when you are active. When you exercise your body with strength training, walking, biking, stretching, or virtually any activity, you are creating slight muscle tears. The muscle tissues heal themselves faster with better nutrition. Many people are taking all these recovery powders, pills, and drinks, when all they need is a proper diet of fresh, locally grown vegetables and fruits. Eating lots of red meat actually creates more harm for the body than many think. Drinking plenty of water each day goes a long way in keeping your body hydrated. Add a lemon slice and now you are also balancing your ph level. It must be a fresh lemon and not a bottle of lemon juice. It is not the same.

Okay let’s talk about your weight. Would you agree, that the more weight you add to your body to worse it is for your joints?Great we can agree on that! So if you are heavy, work at getting the weight off. Then keep it off. Try eating every 2 hours throughout your day and exercise 30 minute a day. Don’t forget to stretch. I know it seems like a lot, but just do it!

I hope you are starting already! Learn what foods are healthy for you and get exercising. Start small and build up quickly to a faster pace. Good Luck. Remember- EAT TO LIVE, NOT LIVE TO EAT!

The Best Method for Helping Kids Lose Weight

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Obesity in children is more prevalent today than ever before, and as the number of severely overweight children increases so do worries about the long-term effects of this illness. Pudgy kids are no longer a “cute” public commodity; they are a symptom of an obesity epidemic.

The rise in cases of childhood obesity is alarming many people. Kids as young as 13 are now classified as obese, which can cause many problems both physical and emotional. Diabetes and high blood pressure are only a few of the serious medical problems brought on by being overweight.

What Can Be Done About It

Staying active is an indispensable part of any good weight-loss plan. And the good news is that developing a fun and effective workout for kids is simple. As long as you keep them moving and having fun, kids will look forward to their workout routine.

Don’t make your child follow a grown-up style exercise routine. This will bore her and make her feel like she is being punished. Make your activities as varied as possible by taking her to the park, riding bikes around the neighborhood, and going swimming at the community pool. Keep things as interesting as you can.

In addition to making sure you child is staying mobile, you will also want to keep an eye on what he’s eating. Focus on helping him make healthy food choices, and don’t forget that he is heavily influenced by the things that you do. If you aren’t eating healthy, neither will he.

The rules are pretty basic. Avoid junk food and foods that contain high amounts of sugar. Naturally, sodas are completely off limits. If you or your kids have trouble controlling yourselves, don’t buy these at all.

You might be giving up a lot of your favorite foods, but eating healthy can be just as tasty. Read labels and find out the nutritional value of other foods at the grocery store. You may be surprised at how many delectable foods are also good for you.

Prepare healthy meals for your kids but it is important to remember not to force them to eat. Give them time to adjust to the new meals; they’ll learn to like it eventually. If your child does something good, do not reward him with food. Instead, do something fun together. Make him pick the activity so he still feels it is a gift for a job well done.

It is also helpful to sit down with your physician to discuss other options available to you. Your doctor can help you map out a plan to keep your children in shape. You can also join support groups as it helps to surround yourself with people who are going through the same thing you are.

No matter how you decide to go about helping your overweight child lose those extra pounds, don’t forget to make every activity as positive as possible. This is an opportunity to engage with your child and an important crossroads in his life. He will need all the support and encouragement he can get from you.

Calories Can Really Make a Difference to Any Weight Loss Plan

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Calories are very significant to any weight loss program. Not many people realize that their weight problem is likely due to a massive consumption of calories on a daily basis. How can we begin to be successful at any weight loss program when we are not willing to give up those foods that cause us to gain weight.

Don’t get all worried, I’m not suggesting that you need to count calories and get out that little food weight scale to measure everything you eat in ounces. That’s the last thing I would want to do as well.

However there is a real difference between counting calories and knowing the calorie counts for the foods you are eating. Not being aware of what you are eating and the amount of calories you consume on a daily basis, is just asking for trouble. Most of us are overweight because we had no idea of the extremely high calorie intake we were consuming each day. Not being aware of the calories in the foods we eat each day is like setting ourselves up for failure no matter what weight loss plan we are following.

A banana has 105 calories approximately, an apple has 71 calories approximately, and an orange has 61 calories approximately. Even though fruits don’t have a huge calorie count you would not want to eat a banana daily, when you could choose something with less calories.

Losing weight is all about calories…even fruits and vegetables in the lower calorie food group have different calorie values. Did you know that a medium banana is approximately 105 calories, a medium apple is approximately 71 calories and a medium orange is approximately 61 calories? I know your thinking, big deal.

Being aware of calories, is a big deal, if you want to lose weight you have to take in less calories than what you normally do. I know for myself I would rather have a banana split than a flavored yogurt for dessert, but just look at the difference in calories. I could have had 2 nutritious meals for the same amount of calories I ate in the banana split.

Eating sensibly doesn’t have to be that hard, it just has to be a well thought out balanced nutritious meal. I enjoy lots of fruits and vegetables, which amazingly become delicious after eating them for awhile. I can say this because I used to hate eating fruits and vegetables. Now I love them.

I have never had to deprive myself of eating anything during my weight loss program Eating sensibly has worked wonders for me.

Get Organized - How To Lose Weight Fast

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Have you ever noticed how those who are disorganized tend to spend most of their time rushing about? The sad thing is that because of their disorganized lifestyle, they also tend to rush their meals and of course, those who eat to fast tend to eat more than they need to which results in them becoming overweight.

Another tell tale sign of an unorganized life is untidiness or mess, both at the work place and at home. Here again, having a lot of mess laying about is bound to cause stress, and stress in turn often leads to overeating. As we can see, having a well organized lifestyle optimizes your chances for a happy and healthier life.

It’s an undeniable fact that stress is a common cause of weight problems as the vast majority of people tend to eat whenever they become stressed.

Being organized will also ensure that you have the right food in your house and you don’t have to resort to low quality foods that you keep as a backup for those times when you run out of the nutritious food that you should be eating.

Being organized will also help you to eat at regular times throughout the day and by being regular with your eating it will help you to lose weight and maintain more consistent blood sugar levels that will reduce the chance of you getting into low blood sugar and over eating to compensate.

By planning ahead with your meals you can plan to have better meals and you won’t need to resort to fast foods because you haven’t got any other food organized by the time you’re ready to eat.

Shopping lists are quite literally invaluable to everyone but especially to those who are on a weight loss program. Planning ahead as to what foods you need will ensure that you always have enough of everything in order to prepare a healthy meal.

For anyone on a weight loss program, being organized is of paramount importance. Not only will it help you maintain a healthy balanced diet, but it will also save you a considerable amount of time. Having planned your meals ahead means you won’t need to spend hours everyday worrying about what you’ll be having for your next meal and this on it’s own, can reduce stress even further.
