Adult Acne - What Is It and How Can You Treat It?

You may be surprised to learn that adult acne is actually fairly common. Everyone knows teenagers often develop pimples as their hormones kick in, but the assumption is teens will “outgrow” their acne.

Although for many lucky people this is the case, but for many others acne can be a persistent problems far past the teen years. Acne during the teen years can have a devastating effect on their self-esteem but adult acne can cause even more psychological stress. It can be disheartening to see your friends and coworkers with clear skin while you are still dealing with pimples that were supposed to be long gone!

Adult acne can be a continuation of teenage acne or can occur for the first time in the early twenties. For a few unfortunate people, acne can persist all the way up to their fifties. Some women, who have enjoyed many years of clear skin, find their acne reappears during the hormone shifts at menopause. Adult acne is usually more difficult to treat than teenage acne and needs a multi-faceted approach to bring the condition under control.

Adult acne can be aggravated by the stresses of career and family, along with a poor diet and unhealthy lifestyle that is so common today.

Dermatologists say acne seems to be on the rise in adults today. While no one is certain why, it seems there is a connection between our unhealthy lifestyles and skin problems.

Males generally have more severe forms of acne and more serious acne scars. The male hormones, or androgens, are the culprits behind this skin condition and young men suffer the most. Ironically though, women have more trouble with chronic acne and pimples in their adult years. Women have the unique hormonal shifts from taking birth control pills, menstrual cycles, pregnancies and menopause, which can cause skin eruptions at these times.

Acne seems to be on the rise today and experts do not know exactly why. Many doctors believe stress and environmental factors such as hormones and antibiotics added to our foods, chemicals in our environment, diets high in sugar and low on nutrients are contributing to the increase.

So what can you do to treat adult acne?

While we are still looking for a “cure” for acne, there is much you can do to treat the symptoms and control this skin problem. There are many prescription and over the counter acne medications that are very effective and new laser technologies are exciting too. As much as people like to deny it, we are more or less partially responsible for our acne. It’s easy to pass blame to the food industry who has transitioned our diet to one plentiful in processed foods, or more so our parents who passed the acne gene along to us. Sure, there are cases where an uncontrollable factor is responsible for our acne, however, we personally make it worse by engaging in poor behaviors.

If you have never experienced acne before, we have some helpful tips to share so that you never have to endure the experience. Picking up good habits early on will drastically reduce your risk of developing this disorder. For those of you have currently suffer or have suffered from acne, let this advice serve you for future purposes. You are encouraged to pass it on if you ever hear contradictory statements.

Whether you like it or not, we live in a rather vain society. People are constantly glancing at their skin in magnified mirrors and buying more skin care products than their bathroom can hold. This obsession with appearance has perpetuated an ill-advised behavior - face touching. Most don’t seem to think twice about touching their face with the same hands that they just used to dust a shelf or clean grease off a kitchen counter. We all know that putting dirty hands in your mouth is a bad idea, so why does this not seem to apply to our facial skin? The lifestyle which the younger population has adopted raises some immense concern. Their way of living, riddled with early morning gaming sessions and sleepless nights cramming for tests, is dangerous. The body requires rest and relaxation to stay healthy and combat disorders like acne. Clear skin will mean a regular sleeping pattern and as stress free of a life as possible. Cut down gaming sessions and better schedule stressful activities so that you can rest. Play by the rules and you will be a healthy, acne-free individual.
