Arranging The Martial Arts By Form, By Art, And By Country

When we consider the best martial arts forms we are considering those martial arts kata that give the most benefit to the student. I usually recommend learning as many patterns and arts as possible, then working on the ones that the student prefers, although there can be oddities in this method. I also hold that one should learn entire arts, first taekwondo, then karate, then kung fu.

The kebons are good, basic kata taught in both karate styles and taekwondo styles. Though there are three to five of these introductory patterns, I don’t usually count them as forms because they are actually the ABCs of the martial arts.

The next batch of forms to consider would be the Taekwondo Taeguks. These are basic forms, a bit more advanced than the kebons, but not as advanced as the Pinans (Heians). Though they take a few moves from the Pinans, they serve them up as straight block and counter moves, no inherent throws or weapons, and no real generation of internal energy.

After the taeguk patterns one should learn the Pinan forms from the Shotokan system, the Kyokushinkai system, and other Japanese martial styles. The Pinan kata are actually designed more for weapons defenses, though not many people know this. The idea here is that one learns the Taeguks for hand to hand combat, then moves into the Pinans for a basic understanding of weapons defenses, and the beginnings of chi eneergy generation.

After the Pinans one should learn the three forms found in the Pan Gai Noon, which are the base forms from Uechi ryu Karate, and which are actually three extremely intense gung fu forms. These three patterns are sanchin, seisan, and sanseirui, though the last one is often thought of as more of a demonstration form. These three unique kata are specifically designed to build the intrinsic energy known as chi or ki.

Sanchin teaches a student to bolt the body/motor down to the ground. There are not a lot of moves in it, but the moves are perfectly designed for adapting hard energy to excellent self defense moves.

Sanchin may be the power form, but seisan is the technique kata. This form takes the power of sanchin and transfigures it into (probably) 13 specific self defense moves. These are all based on one specific move called wa uke, which is a circle block with a flesh tearing grab on the end.

So to ultimate arrangement of forms is Kebons to Taeguk to Pinans to Sanchin and seisan; or, as art, from taekwondo to karate to kung fu. This sequencing of martial arts forms provides the student with the most complete arrangement of classical martial arts training possible. Other forms can and should be leaned, but the heart of the art can really be found in this arrangement of art.

Three Things You Need To Do To Learn From Martial Arts DVDs

Some people might not want you to know this, but it is pretty darned easy to learn good karate or kenpo, or whatever combat art you wish to study, from Martial Arts DVDs. You can study hard core self defense, fighting taekwondo, classical gong fu fighting moves. You can learn just about any fighting art there is, and there are judo dvds, taekwondo DVDs, you can even consider martial arts DVD rental!

Before you purchase that Kung Fu training DVD and start doing the Randy Couture all over the place, there are three things that you absolutely must do. It really is critical, and your success or failure will hinge upon these three things. Indeed, without doing these three items you might just as well give up your martial arts DVD training.

The first thing you need, and this is so simple that it is a no brainer, is you need a place. Even if you don’t have a personal Shotokan training hall, or a taekwondo dojang, or a Kung Fu kwoon, you must act as if you do. You have to select a spot in which to train and mock it up as a fighting dojo.

You need to clear out the clutter, not just shove it in the corners, because you are going to want to hang shiny kung fu weapons on the walls. You are going to have to check the rafters, because you are going to want to hang a kicking bag and not bring down the ceiling! You are going to want about 15 by 15 of good condition floor, because you want to be able to do Choy Lay Fut patterns or work on your shotokan karate kata DVD without running into anything or stepping on anything.

The second thing you will need is a time. I know this sounds silly, but businesses survive, people learn things in school, everything in the world runs by being in the correct place at the correct time. So you are going to need to set aside a couple of hours every couple of days, or whenever you plan to train, and you are going to never miss an appointment!

Your wife wants you to take her dancing…no! The kids are going to have to clean their rooms by themselves. And turn that blasted telephone off!

Now, you have the time and the place, and one would assume you have the latest and greatest martial arts video training tape (my favorite is Matrix Karate…it was inexpensive, but the data on it was worth ten tapes), and you must not forget…your partner! You need to have somebody who is willing to do the sweat, put in the time, make the appointment, and wants to have a blast! In a way, your martial arts training partner is the most important thing of all, because without a real body to practice your kung fu techniques on it just won’t get real!

Now, you know the things that need to be done, and I want to say one thing: past the cost of cleaning your garage and a few Matrix Aikido videos, this is virtually free martial arts training. You go as fast as you want, no one to push you past your comfortable learning speed, nobody to slow you down. And that’s what you’re going to have to do if you want to learn from Martial Arts DVDs.

Win Every Fight With The Only Three Techniques Of Kickboxing Karate

I know, kickboxing karate doesn’t really exist, but it does make a fine translation of arts. When you shift from karate to kickboxing, or shift from kickboxing back to karate, you can win every single contest you are in by knowing the three things I am going to tell you in this article. We are dealing only with the fists, mind you, so you have to control the distance to make sure that you stay at a distance that is comfortable for you to punch at.

If you are going to try to use this information with the feet we would have to set up an art called karate tae kwon do…grin. Or, if you were going to use it with fancy trapping manuevers we might call it shaolin kickboxing. Call it anything you want, the techniques will work, but you might have to make some changes.

Before we get into the techniques I should tell you how to set them up. You want to stand with the hands extended, elbows about 135 degrees, palms facing outward, so that the hands are in front of the shoulders. This, incidentally, is an ‘I don’t want to fight’ sign, which is a good thing because it is better to avoid a fight.

The basic rule here is that two objects can’t be in the same place and at the same time. Go on, shove one desk through another desk. You’ll just end up with fire material.

First Technique, he is going to have to go around you, and you can do a hard block and punch. This isn’t even a counter, this is done at the same time with a slight body shift/sidestep. You will have immediately grabbed the initiative and can follow up with an inside attack.

Second technique, he is going to try shifting to the front and jabbing, and you can just pass him and pound on his body. With these two techniques he is trying to go around you, and this will set him up by shutting his weapons down, or opening his targets up. A little practice and you will be able to tell which way he is going.

Third technique, and this is the one we want, is when he tries to go between your hands. He can be blocked easily, and, the potential for trapping him, simply by closing your hands, is large. You trap his elbow and his wrist and work an arm bar, and when he tries to back out, or otherwise wiggle, you elbow roll him, and you can work elbow spikes and secondary punches, all while keeping him trapped and unable to fight back.

This fighting technique can further be improved by shifting the body or changing the distance between your palms, thus encouraging your attacker to do exactly what you want. In other words, you will have created the path of his entry, and nobody is easier to beat than a fighter who is predictable. So, there you go, that is how you actually apply matrixing concepts to the first moves of a fight, and when you win that battle just tell everybody you study kickboxing karate…heh.

Real Shaolin Kung Fu, As It Happened in the Movies!

The era of the ultimate and real gung fu was about 1975 to 1985, give or take a few years. Of course, the time period could probably include the time period of 1985 to 1995, because that is when those movies hit the late night TV circuit. And, of course, chop sockies forever, because we can now get them on Amazon, though we should make sure it is a clean copy and that we have a good DVD player.

One could make argument that Bruce Lee provided the first kung fu flick, and they wouldn’t be wrong, for his movies started the flood of kung fu flicks in America. The first real chop sockie, however, would have to be Five Fingers of Death, with the amazing and inspiring Lo Lieh. Lo Lieh, who thrust his broken fingers into cauldrons of red hot rocks until he could have his revenge.

The main chop sockie movie maker, though there were hundreds, would be the Shaw Brothers. They churned out hundreds of the things, and they convinced the world that if you had an idea and dedicated yourself, you could learn gung fu. The main man of Shaw Brothers was a fellow name of Gordon Liu.

Gordon Liu knew real gung fu, and I believe he was adopted into a family of movie makers. One brother was the director of these magnificent masterpieces, and the other brother was involved with stunt work. I think that was the situation.

Among his masterpieces, and I will name three here, was The Master Killer, also known as Thirty Six Chambers of Death. Mr. Liu always played endearing fools, tilting at windmills, who, through Kung Fu, came out on top. The Master Killer was his entry into the field, and it shoved him right to the top.

One of his gems was Return to the 36th Chamber, where he plays, surprise of surprises, an endearing fool. The plot is silly, the acting is farcical, but the idea that one can learn kung fu from the common tasks of life is incredible. And, when our bumbling fool returns to his village, entirely disillusioned, only to find out what those nefarious monks have done to him…well, the phrase ‘I Do Know Kung Fu’ becomes a clarion call and inspiration to all kung fu students everywhere.

My favorite of Gordon Liu’s movies is an epic titled Fists of the White Lotus. Our endearing fool is betrayed, practices his moves for ten years so he can have revenge, only to find out that the bad guy has also had ten years to practice his moves. This movie inspired Bak Mei of Kill Bill fame (played by Gordon Liu) and far outshadows such well meaning epics as Crouching Tiger and Kill Bill and that ilk.

I Used Karate to have the Strongest Mind in the World

Zingo bingo! The Strongest Mind ever to exist in the Whole Wide World! Able to woo any dame and beat up any villain, and…sounds a bit too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Oddly, what I did worked, but not in the way I thought it would. So let me tell you what I did, no charge, and see how you do. Are you ready?

I once came across the concept that a man who can concentrate on one thing for three minutes can takeover the whole world. The point was that to stay mentally concentrated on one thing, to put it simply, expands the mental wattage. Having read this, and wanting to have the most fully functional brain allowed by the powers that be, or anybody else, I decided to do it.

I was doing doing a form of Karate at the time, and exploring martial forms such as Sticky Hands from Wing Chun Gung Fu, and various other martial systems, and I really thought that I had the mental willpower to pull anything off. I did my kata, I could remain calm during kumite, and I had the diehard discipline. Now all I had to do was apply that discipline to pursuing Nirvana, entering heaven, or whatever you want to call it.

I decided to use a simple, little rock as my vehicle for the ultimate concentration and the resulting explosion of pure mentality which, I hoped, wouldn’t shatter the universe too badly. A rock, after all, was what the earth was, and the shape of the thing was round, like the universe, and it seemed so appropriate. So I went into a nearby field and chose a well shaped but ordinary rock, and prepared to enter Nirvana.

I sat down under a tree, placed the rock before me, and focused on it. I tried not to think, I tried to just be aware of the rock, and to ignore all those silly little surface thoughts, like what was for lunch and what the latest movie was, or what I was going to do that weekend. I was, after all, going to shatter down the doors to heaven, so what use could such mundane thoughts have for me, right?

After three minutes I got to my feet, tossed the rock aside, and started walking away, totally disgusted with how boring the whole thing was. I mean, to think that I was going to become an enlightened being just by being able to think at a rock, how stupid, how boring! Suddenly, my body was jerked to a halt as a sudden thought overwhelmed me.

It wasn’t the rock that was boring, it was me. All that boredom was being generated by me, and I realized something…I would never be bored again. And I suddenly realized, in this moment of self revelation, the thing had worked, but not at all how I thought it would.

The last thing an attacker wants is to draw any kind of attention to what it is they are doing. If you ever find yourself being attacked you MUST go on the offensive immediately. The attacker will not be expecting that and it will throw them off balance. And, at the same time, yell and scream and make as much noise as is humanly possible. The attacker will not have been prepared for that type of reaction from you and will probably thinking “Eh, maybe I should get out of here and look for an easier target”.

Here is an easy way to help you avoid becoming a victim, carry a self defense product with you all the time. You can choose the product you feel most comfortable with. It could be a stun gun, a can of pepper spray, a personal audible alarm or a TASER. These personal protection products will give you a definite edge over an attacker and can help you escape from a dangerous situation. Always have your self defense product readily available. Don’t carry it at the bottom of your purse or briefcase. Keep it close by so you have immediate access to it.

What happened to Screw Up Karate!

Back in the fifties Karate hit the United States. Advertisements showed men killing bulls, and promised that a slight woman could beat up a grown man. Why, even a child. using this wonderful science called Karate, could accomplish amazing feats.

So what happened? What happened is that there was such demand for the art that there weren’t enough teachers. And we must now ask ourselves what, exactly, does a person need to teach Karate?

When Karate first arrived, guys were getting their black belts in three years, and then turning around and teaching. But to master the art it took a dozen years, and an instructor needs more data than a master. Just because you have the data, and are a master, doesn’t mean that you can get somebody else to get it.

Come up to present times. You’ve got guys with twenty years experience teaching the martial arts, and they’ve mastered the art, but nobody ever taught them how to teach. Experience will make a master,you see, but an instructor needs more than simple experience.

To be an instructor requires specialized data. He doesn’t just need boot class to get tougher, he needs to find out the reasons why things work, and be able to get other people to understand those reasons. It is a matter of a real education, you see.

So you want to take karate, and you walk into a school and observe a teacher. Is the teacher explaining why things work? Or is he merely asking people to mimic him?

Yes, Monkey see monkey do is the first stage, but it only lasts a few minutes. The real information of why something works must be inserted, or what is being taught will become an exercise of memorization. And when the mugger comes at you, do you want to remember how to defend yourself, or do you want to have the instantaneous intuition that is available if you don’t just memorize, but know and understand the how and the why of why the moves are what they are?

So there is it. A martial art that could do all it claimed, but was savaged by quick black belts who wanted to make money, and who didn’t take the time to ask why they were doing what they were doing. I trust this information will help you when you seek an instructor, and when you are undergoing instruction.
