Cleaning Up Sewage Water Damage in Your Yard
Tuesday, May 11th, 2010Whether you’re meticulous when it comes to maintaining your yard or not, it’s entirely possible that you will experience problems with sewage at one point or another. This is the last type of water damage you want to have happen to your property, since it’s a difficult one to solve and one of the most disgusting varieties out there.
There are a few different places that sewage damage can come from. Sewer pipes burst all the time, but sewage backing up into your house via a toilet or even a bathtub isn’t unheard of. While you may not notice that there is a problem in your yard right to start with, the smell will soon overwhelm anything else on the property.
Unfortunately, unless you try to take care of it yourself, sewage repair can become fairly expensive, especially if you’re dealing with issues with your septic tank. Talk to your homeowner’s insurance company; they will most likely send someone out to give you some advice on what you need to do. Hiring someone to fix the problem is the best solution if you can afford to do so, but until you get a chance to, keep your kids and pets away from the area. Keep in mind that sewage by nature is contaminated and can cause health problems if you allow yourself to be exposed to too much of it.
Hiring someone to deal with the problem is usually best, but you need to get with a few different companies and get some references, if the problem isn’t at emergency level. If sewage is spewing into your backyard at an alarming rate, however, getting references may not exactly be practical. Find out how much they’re going to charge you and as a general rule, accept the middle bid. Make sure the person you hire is licensed and insured and whatever you do, don’t pay them all of the agreed upon amount until the job is done.
You want to make sure and get the waste cleaned up as soon as possible after the leak is repaired. Waste can cause all manner of illness if it’s allowed to stay. Keep in mind that your city sewage system could be the problem and if you suspect this is the case, talk to your contractor. The city might have to pay your contractor for his trouble.
Using a septic line cleaner that can be flushed down your toilet is a good prevention for build up in your sewer lines, especially in older lines. These cleaning products are inexpensive and easy to use. They can be helpful to keep your sewer pipes clean, as clean as a sewer pipe can be anyway.
